Hey Holly. Did I really know about the video on iTunes before you??!!
Whilst the LC tour would have been a great opportunity I’m selfishly pleased that by turning it down it means we’ll have more HP music and sooner!
Hope the covers album is coming on well (and that maybe you’ve checked out my suggestions – Kate Bush please!!!!!!).
Great new photo by the way….ah for some sunshine (I’m writing this on a typically bleak and cold March day in England).

hey lee..
yeah, i submitted the video to itunes through tunecore.com in january. the turn around time is from 6-8 weeks and i hadn’t checked in a while so you did see it first. thanks.

Hi Holly! I am such a huge fan of your music! I am planning on coming to your show April 17th at Teddy’s. If you could put me on the list with a +1 that would be great! Thanks!

I forgot to say that on the strength of your recommendation I bought the Rickie Lee Jones CD Pirates and you were spot on – it’s amazing!
Comment by Lee B — March 31, 2008 comment link
hey donna k..
you are on. if you think of it. drop me another comment here day of, or day before so that i make double sure that i got you.
excellent!
lee i’m so glad you picked up “pirates”!
joey warnoker who produced my album SFT with justin m-j and i, is named checked on that album. he’s the “joey” she refers to in the song, “pirates” and i think one other place too. his dad is a great record producer and produced the first two rickie albums. check it out.

I’m about 4 months late… but regarding the covers idea, I think it would be fantastic to hear you take on Rickie Lee’s “Company.” I also remember your performance of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” at one of the shows at Arlene’s Grocery. It was literally within a month or so of my ‘discovery’ of Roberta Flack’s music, so it was a highlight of the show. I still get goosebumps! On the totally random side: “Misguided Angel” by the Cowboy Junkies or this song called “Falling out of love with me” by Dolly Parton are a couple I’d love to hear you sing. But seriously- you could sing the phone book and we’d listen…

Hi Holly,
Thank you for your reply. This country is amazing!!!
I love that song. I was trying to write down by myslef but I am a drummer:-( it makes me small problems:-)
“Not backstage guy anymore but not yet musician”-polish joke about drummers and it is kind of true. I think:P
I will bring it to my writing skills class this week and than we’ll see. If I need some corrections I’ll let you know.
Thank you once again.

hi rick…
i love “the first time ever i saw your face”.
johnny cash’s version is really something.
have you heard it?
i really got the communication of that song the first time i heard his very personal recording of it.
i love company.
i used to sing it all the time.
maybe i’ll pull it out again.
i’ll check the others you mentioned.
andy…may the force be with you..
mai-ling….yes, it was a thrill for sure. to be clear, i wanted to mention that i do all kinds of singing work to support my own productions, film scores, commercials, song demos and the occasional background singing job. it’s nice to sing and get paid for it. the important thing for me in considering whether to take a job or not, in addition to my feelings about the music, is time. providing support to another artist is a pleasure particularly when in balance with creating music of my own.
for instance, tonight i’m out on the road on a two week run with idina menzel (from Wicked and Rent). She’s an excellent singer (and very funny person) who just put her solo record out. this gig is ideal in many ways because we are doing short runs, the band is great and for the first time, i am playing guitar in someone else’s band. she’s got me playing acoustic on four songs and i am loving it.
it’s also my first foray as well into the world of playing with a pick which i have studiously avoided since picking up the guitar a few years ago. in my music i prefer a muted, dark, troubadour style, side-of-the-index finger brand of playing. her music wants a brighter and bigger tone, so over the last couple of weeks, i’ve begun playing with a pick. i’m getting used to it and enjoying the challenge. we are doing a short run of small theaters on the east coast to prepare for her PBS taping on April 14th.
in the van today i was watching the dvd of john lennon’s Imagine. if you’ve seen it, remember the part where he’s talking to the guy who has been sleeping in his garden? i wanted to cry at the end when he says to the guy, “are you hungry?”. after trying to explain to him that his songs are either about him or maybe yoko and what he’s going through, or just a bit of nonsense, that he wasn’t writing about the guy, that if the songs mean something to other people than that’s great. the guy doesn’t really totally buy it and then john asks him if he’s hungry. it was so sweet to me, so very humane. he didn’t make the guy wrong for sleeping in his garden, rather he really seemed to want to get in communication with him and tell him his point of view. i was just struck by his caring. he cared very much and it was beautiful.
good night.

Hey miss fabulous HP <3!
I didn’t realize you had a blog here!
Anyways so you might remember me because on a biannual basis I seem to bother you about this haha: Are we ever going to see Happily Ever After and If You Believe? I’d be willing to pay so much money for them – every album you’ve done is such a masterpiece and it kills me knowing I’m missing part of it! haha well I’m sure there’s good reasons they’re not available right?
And for a song suggestion for your next album – I know this is totally out there because the band that does the song isn’t exactly great but Blink 182’s I Miss You – that song is actually really great (and that’s coming from someone who rarely even listens to male vocalists much less the pop-punk/punk genre) but that song is great and pretty. If you did a stripped down version it’d be gorgeous! The drums in that song actually totally remind me of Leaving In Love.
Much love, Jake.

Hey Holly! I discovered you when I saw you with Idina back in January at Virgin, but the last week or so, I’ve really fallen in love with your music. “That’s Why They Call It Rome” is currently my favorite. So after hearing some of your solo stuff, seeing you Friday night in Delaware was such a treat. Especially when you picked up your guitar! I saw you in the hotel afterwards and I wish I could have met you. The crew had nothing but great things to say about you though. Anyway! I’ll be seeing Idina in San Diego on June 20th and I was wondering if you’re going to be touring with her this summer. If not, I was wondering if you’ll still be singing at the Kid’s Cotton Club around that time. Since I’ll be over in the area (I live in FL) I would love to be able to see you either way. Thanks!

So I just figured out why your name sounded SOOO familiar. I didn’t realize that it was you that recorded “Down With Love” with Michael Buble. That’s one of my favorite movies and I’ve loved that song ever since, but I don’t have the soundtrack. I just remember seeing your name and loving your voice. Anyway, now that I’m done sharing my revelation with everyone! : )

hey hailey…yeah, that’s me with michael. that session was such a good time. he is a hilarious person in addition to being a great singer.
this run is over, i’m in hotel room in times square now, gonna go meet a friend and fly back to LA. i’ll be home working on music for the next month and then i think London and DC with Idina in mid-may. was someone asking if i will be with her on the summer tour? the answer is yes. we are doing about six weeks starting mid-june.
i met chris botti backstage at lincoln center yesterday when we taped the PBS special. he was lovely. it was great to finally meet him cause he recorded my song, LOVE GETS OLD a few years ago and this was the first time we’ve said hello. check it out on his album and let me know what you think…

Thanks so much Holly! That’s great to hear! When I talked to Burt the other night, he told me Idina was touring this summer but he wasn’t sure about dates, so I’ll start planning around mid-June! And yes, it was me asking about you touring with her. I’m sooo glad that I’ll be able to see you again (in San Diego)! I wish I could see you perform alone in LA as well, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to see you either way. Just in the last two days, I’ve converted 4 friends into HP fans. I’m pretty damn proud of myself. Haha.
So you’re going over to London with Idina? Are you going to be touring over there or are you just going for support? I’m glad you enjoyed the PBS special. I heard Idina was pretty hard on herself and didn’t really enjoy it. I’m sure she was just exhausted after two back to back concerts and then two 12 hour rehearsals in a row. : (
Anyway, hope you enjoy your week! Talk to you soon!

Hey Holly. Just found your track with Jason Crigler on iTunes – it’s gorgeous. Can you tell us a little more about how that collaboration came about?
Comment by Lee B — May 14, 2008 comment link
Rather late to this blog…but I just wanted to say that I totally get the back and forth when it comes to your own music vs. working on other people’s, etc. I’ve been a background vocalist for several years now and I think for me it almost becomes a purposeful distraction. I love performing and so to be a part of someone else’s show without the focus being solely on me is wonderful. But it became somewhat of a cop-out for not working on my own songs, and I’ve actually had to leave a few really cool gigs because I was focusing so hard on other people’s projects and neglecting my own.
Anyway…just wanted to say “I hear ya.” Hope all is well…

I have been a fan for too many years to count. I don’t even remember how I came across your name and site, but ever since I have been transfixed by your musical style. I’m now living out in Cali, and hopefully (economy-depending) I can make it out for dinner at Genghis on the 26th. If I don’t make it, it sounds like fun! Please keep us updated where you’re going next… I tried to make it out to one of your gigs about a year ago in Hollywood and I couldn’t find the place.
