a game of defense

scrabble is a game of defense.  did you ever think about it like that?  as tempting as it is to put all your eggs in the seven-letter-word basket, i think the game is much more about exactly where you put your two, three and four letter words.  for instance, if you lay down your tiles in a way that gives your opponent the opportunity to score a double or triple word score, that could cost you the game in an instant.  maybe you already know this.  if not, try it.  it’s a whole different mindset than the one that’s hoarding blanks.

who am i listening to?  right now i’m listening to my friend sunny levine’s album, LOVE RHINO and before that aimee mann’s christmas album.   the icelandic band, mum makes beautiful records.  if you haven’t heard them, check out these two to start; GREEN GRASS OF TUNNEL & SUMMER MAKE GOOD.

  1. The late and sadly missed (by me anyway as he was much more than the Addicted To Love video) Robert Palmer used to chair Scrabble competitions. Was the game over by the time you took the picture? There’s still space for more additions. Yesterday I was sat right in front of Bill Bruford at a drum clinic of his, at the Royal Festival Hall – Hooray. Later today, at work, I’ll have to witness X-Factor judge Louis Walsh doing a book signing on how to succeed in the music biz. Maybe I’ll tell him that the only thing that will be sucking seeds is him if he doesn’t leave. Just kidding. If you haven’t already, check out Madeleine Peyroux’s ‘Careless Love’. Everyone says she sounds like Billie Holiday but I reckon this album is closer to Peggy Lee’s Black Coffee album.

  2. Yes, Love Rhino is a great album. I’m one of those who has been lucky enough to find the Orange Stella Records version when it was still around, and I’ve been enjoying it ever since.

Scrabble, on the other hand, I haven’t played in years.
